A great number of different nations live on our planet. various factors. The climate and the relief of the inhabited territory strongly influence the temperament of people. Historical events, that also have their impact. According to the specific way of life and national spirit, each nationality has its own traditions and customs that are likely to have come from the early times and still play the great role in people’s life.

Speaking about the traditions of the USA, it is important to consider the characteristic peculiarities of the American nature. Who is a typical American? What associates more than three hundred million people living in this country and what makes them such a strong nation?

Let us recall the historical events that have contributed to the early formation of the country. It is a well-known fact, that it was European invaders . Those who came to conquer the New World had to create everything by themselves, endure hunger, battles with natives and hard times in general. Persistence, self-confidence and endurance – these traits of character are inherent to real Americans. Furthermore, these people are mostly individualists, freedom-lovers and risk-takers.

American culture has absorbed the customs of European colonizers and migrants from Europe and Africa. Natives, like the Indians and the Hawaiians, African slaves have made some contribution too. The USA is often called a “melting pot”. But the major country that has influenced the culture of the USA is England. It was England that brought the official language to the Americans.

Nowadays, America itself spreads its traditions all over the world. American music, movies and television are popular in every corner of the world. It can be argued that the USA determines the life style for contemporary humanity. The major life aspirations of the Americans are expressed in the “American dream” idea and a lot of people, even if they are not from the USA try to follow its core principles. The material side of “an American dream” is embodied in possessing a private house and an automobile, and the moral side implies that everything must be achieved by the personal efforts.

The Americans are very religious people. Church plays a great role in the life of every citizen. The government of the country endorses the freedom of choice of the religion, and, as a result have appeared here. The largest one is known as Mormon’s sect. The representatives of this sect travel all over the world to spread Mormonism among other people.

The USA has its own federal holidays. Together with international holidays, like New Year and Christmas, the Americans celebrate a number of their own ones. They have got two military holidays. One of them – Memorial Day – is celebrated on the last Monday of May. the Americans honor the memory of those who were killed in military conflicts. Veteran’s Day is dedicated to all living participants of the American wars. Inauguration Day and President’s Day praise the ruler of the country. At the same time, George Washington – the first American president and other outstanding ones are . Independence Day is one of the favorite holidays of the Americans. On the fourth of July in 1776 the declaration of independence from the Great Britain was signed. The evening sky is lighted up with fireworks; the streets are full of carnival parades. The concerts are held and families go to barbeques and picnics. Summer in the USA finishes with Labor Day which symbolizes the end of the vacations. Also in America people celebrate such holidays as St. Valentine’s Day, Halloween and St. Patrick’s Day. These holidays are very colorful, cheerful and each of them brings unique atmosphere. So, no wonder, that a tradition to celebrate the Atlantic Ocean. It is important to mention that the Americans are family people and they try to spend all the holidays together with their relatives exchanging presents and having fun.

The Americans are proud of their educational system. Schools and universities in the USA give the education of a very high quality. That’s why many talented people from the other countries come here to enter Harvard, Stanford, Princeton or other institutions. The government of the USA is interested in attraction of clever individuals, and usually those who study in America never turn back home and remain to work in various companies.

I would like to tell you about holidays and traditions in the United States of America. The so-called legal holidays include Christmas, New Year"s Day, Martin Luther King Day, President"s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving and others.

Christmas is a religious holiday celebrated on the 25-th of December. On this day Americans celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ and sing Christmas carols. Another important tradition is sending Christmas cards. People start sending cards to their relatives and friends early in December. Going home for Christmas is another good tradition. Christmas is considered to be a family celebration and every person must come back home on this day. This means that at Christmas American houses are full of aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives who might not see each other for a year. Americans put up a Christmas tree and decorate it with toys and sweets. There are religious ceremonies at churches on Christmas Day and families usually attend them. The Christmas table is very big. You can see turkey, ham, sweet potatoes, pies and other food. In the morning children hurry to the Christmas tree to look for presents. They hang big colourful socks for Santa Claus to put presents inside. Everybody starts unwrapping presents and thanking each other.

New Year"s Day is celebrated on the 1-st of January but Americans begin celebrating it on the 31-st of December. There is a big celebration in Times Square in New York City on this day. New Year"s Day is not as widely celebrated as Christmas. On January 1 Americans visit friends, relatives and neighbours. There are parties and а lot of food. People watch television together and write New Year’s resolutions.

Martin Luther King Day is celebrated on the third Monday of January. Martin Luther King was a black man who won full civil rights for black Americans. On this day schools, offices and federal agencies are closed.

Memorial Day is on the last Monday of May. On this day Americans honour the memories of their dead relatives. This day is also the beginning of summer. Americans go to relax at the beach or go to the mountains.

Independence Day is one of the most important holidays in America. It is celebrated on the 4-th of July. On this day in 1776 the Declaration of Independence was signed in Philadelphia. There are picnics, parades and fireworks all over the country on Independence Day. Americans do not work: they have day-long picnics with their favourite food like hot-dogs, hamburgers, potato salad and others.

Halloween is a holiday celebrated mostly by children and the young. On the 31-st of October they dress as vampires, witches and ghosts and go from house to house saying: "Trick or treat?" People should give them a treat, otherwise the children will play a trick on them.

Thanksgiving is one of the popular American holidays, too. It is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. This holiday dates back to the time when the first settlers, the Pilgrims, came to America. Their first winter was very hard, they had little food. In spring the Indians taught them to plant and grow new crops, hunt and fish. The following autumn the colonists made a great feast for the Indians. At Thanksgiving American families gather and spend this day together. The traditional Thanksgiving food is roast turkey, pumpkin pies, cranberry jelly, ham, sweet potatoes, and other delicious food.

The United States is a young country, but it has a lot of great old and new holidays that are fun to celebrate.

American holidays are strikingly different in origin and show surprising similarities in the manner of their celebration. No matter what the holiday"s origin is, they all seem to be the same thing. A holiday has simply become, for most Americans, a day off from work, though some (for example, Thanksgiving and Christmas) retain some individuality.

The major holidays in the USA are:

New Year"s Day, January, 1st:
People stay awake until after midnight on December 31st to "watch the Old Year out and the New Year in." Many parties are given on this night. Theatres, night clubs, restaurants are crowded. When midnight comes, they greet the New Year: people gather in the streets of big cities, they ring bells, blow whistles and automobile horns, some shoot off guns and firecrackers.

Valentine"s Day, February, 14th:
It is not a national holiday. Banks and offices do not close, but it is a happy little festival in honour of St Valentine, patron of sweethearts and lovers. It is widely celebrated among people of all ages by the exchange of "valentines." A "valentine" may mean a special greeting card or a little present. The greeting cards are often coloured red, have red trimmings and pictures of hearts.

Washington"s Birthday, February, 22d:
In addition to commemorating the birth of the United States" first President, it"s a great day for shoppers. The department stores of Washington, DC, stated a national tradition of sales marked by unusual bargains. It is not a national holiday. Many schools, offices and banks close for this day, some stay open. The US Congress observes the birthday of George Washington with speeches and readings from his works.

Easter:
Easter is in memory of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. It falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon between March, 22, and April, 25. The 40 days before Easter are called Lent. Just before Easter, schools and colleges usually close. Students have a week or ten days of spring vacation. Easter is a church holiday, and many churches have an outdoor sunrise service. People give each other presents of eggs which are the symbol of new life. There is a popular belief that wearing three new things on Easter will bring good luck throughout the year.

Memorial Day, May, 30th:
It is a national holiday. Schools, banks and offices close for the day. On that day, Americans honour the servicemen who gave their lives in past wars. Schools, clubs and churches decorate the cemeteries. They put up the flags on the graves of the army, navy and airmen. They hold memorial services in churches, halls, parks and cemeteries. In addition to solemn services Memorial Day is often marked by other, more joyful ceremonies: colourful parades, sports competitions.

Independence Day, July, 4th:
On this day, in 1776, America signed the Declaration of Independence. It is a national public holiday celebrated with fireworks and speeches praising "Americanism, democracy, free enterprise".

Labor Day, the first Monday in September:
It is a holiday of recreation. It marks the end of summer and the beginning of autumn. Vacation time is over. Resorts, camps and beaches close ... Parents go to summer camps and take their children back home.

Halloween, October, 31st:
Halloween is the day or evening before All Saints" Day. Halloween customs date back to a time when people believed in devils, witches and ghosts. They thought that these evil spirits could do all kinds of damage to property. Some people tried to ward off witches by painting magic signs on their barns. Others tried to scare them away by nailing a piece of iron, such as a horseshoe, over the door. Now most people do not believe in evil spirits. On this day they just have a nice holiday. Children dress up as ghosts and witches and go out into the streets to beg. They go from house to house and say: "Trick of treat!", meaning "Give me a treat or I"ll play a trick on you". People give them candy, cookies and apples. A favourite custom is to make a jack-o"-lantem. Children scrape out a pumpkin and cut the outlines of eyes, nose and mouth in its side. They light a candle inside the pumpkin to scare their friends. This custom refers to a man named Jack who still wanders around the earth lighting his way with a pumpkin lantern.

Veterans Day:
On this day, the radio and television broadcast services held at the National Cemetery in Arlington. High officials come from Washington to attend these services. They place a wreath of flowers at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. All stand in silence for a few minutes at eleven o"clock to honour the memory of the servicemen killed in the two World Wars.

Thanksgiving Day, the fourth Thursday in November:
In the USA it is a national holiday. It was first celebrated in 1621 by the Pilgrim Fathers after their first good harvest. Thanksgiving is a family day, for it is customary for all members of the family to gather at the home of their parents. The family eats a large traditional dinner, usually with turkey, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie.

Christmas Day, December, 25th:
It is usually a one-day official holiday, but it is preceded and followed by festive parties, and marked by special church services, gift-giving and feasting. Christmas is a family holiday. Schools and colleges close between Christmas and New-Year"s Day. People stay at home and spend the time with their families. Everybody tries to come home for Christmas. People send cards or Christmas greetings to family and friends away from home. Every family tries to have a Christmas tree, which is beautifully decorated. Santa Claus comes from the North Pole in his sleigh, dressed in red cap and jacket, entering the house from chimney. He is a merry and fat individual. He has gifts of whatever kind you may wish for — nothing is too fabulous nor too trivial for him to provide.

Seven of the federal legal holidays - New Year’s Day; Washington’s Birthday/ Presidents’ Day; Memorial Day; Independence Day; Labor Day; Thanksgiving and Christmas - are observed nearly universally throughout the public and private sectors They are considered to be American favorite holidays.

New Year’s Day (January 1) - Americans celebrate the beginning of a new year at home, with friends, and in gatherings from the Tournament of Roses Parade in California to the giant gathering in New York’s Times Square.

Washington’s Birthday (third Monday in February) - The birthday of George Washington, the first president of the United States, has been a legal holiday since 1885. A number of states also celebrated the February 1 - the birthday of Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president. Some legislators advocated combining the two events into a single holiday. Many Americans now call the holiday "Presidents’ Day," to honor both Washington and Lincoln or all presidents.

Memorial Day (last Monday in May) - This holiday honors the lives lost in every war conflict. The Uniform Holidays Act established a federal legal holiday, fixed on a Monday, beginning in 1971. All 50 states observe the holiday

Independence Day (July 4) - The Independence Day holiday commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence by the Second Continental Congress on July 4, 1776.

Labor Day (first Monday in September) - the Labor Day holiday commemorates the contributions of working men and women. For many Americans the holiday demarks the unofficial end of summer and beginning of the school year.

Thanksgiving Day (fourth Thursday in November) - A variant of the harvest festivals celebrated, this holiday is on the fourth Thursday is November. Thanksgiving is typically celebrated at home. It remains the occasion for a large and festive meal, and for expressing thanks, for that bounty.

Christmas Day (December 25) - Most Protestants and Roman Catholics and some Orthodox Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus on December 25. Christmas is celebrated at home, with the decoration and display of evergreen Christmas Trees, and with families and children exchanging gifts and cards.

There are federal holidays in the USA when the government offices and some private businesses are closed, and American people enjoy their days off. The national favorites are Christmas and Thanksgiving Day. Christmas Day is celebrated on the 25 th of December. President’s Day (or Washington’s Birthday) is celebrated on the 22 nd of February and it honors the first president of the USA.

Some American holidays are also observed in many countries of the world. Among them are St. Valentine’s Day (sweethearts and lovers of all ages exchange special greeting cards “valentines” and small presents on the 14 th of February to express their love and affection), Halloween (on the 31 st of October Americans carve jack-o-lanterns out of pumpkins and wear scary costumes and masks to frighten off devils, ghosts and witches) and New Year’s Day (the night before the 1 st of January Americans stay awake and gather to watch fireworks and shoot off firecrackers, make traditional New Year’s resolutions and wish each other a happy coming year).

There are some other popular American celebrations that happen every year: Easter (which falls on Sunday in March or April), Mother’s Day (the second Sunday in May) and Father’s Day (the third Sunday in June).

В День Ветеранов (11 ноября) и День Памяти (30 мая) США почитают американских ветеранов и погибших служащих во всех войнах. День Колумба отмечается во второй понедельник октября и посвящен высадке Кристофора Колумба в Новом Свете в 1492 году. День Труда также считается федеральным праздником в первый понедельник сентября, когда рабочий народ выходит на парады для празднования окончания лета. День Президента (или День рождения Вашингтона) отмечается 22 февраля в честь первого президента США.

Некоторые американские праздники наблюдаются также и во многих странах мира. Среди них: День святого Валентина (возлюбленные и влюбленные всех возрастов обмениваются специальными открытками «валентинками» и маленькими подарочками 14 февраля для того, чтобы выразить свою любовь и расположение), Хэллоуин (31 октября американцы вырезают фонари из тыквы и надевают страшные костюмы и маски для того, чтобы отпугнуть дьяволов, привидений и ведьм) и Новый год (в ночь накануне 1 января американцы не спят и собираются для того, чтобы смотреть и запускать фейерверки, принимать традиционные новогодние решения и пожелать друг другу счастливого наступающего года).
